The Chasm: RDA’s v. Optimal Nutrition

The need for optimal nutrition today is a no brainer. Depleted soils. Environmental toxicity. Processed foods. Chronic degenerative disease.

Firing up your immune system has never been more important. But for some reason, the powers that be don’t educate the public about the need for optimal nutrition. They are stuck promoting Recommended Dietary Allowances, or RDA’s… numbers based on a system established three generations ago.

Let’s compare the two. Before we do, let’s define optimal nutrition. Though somewhat subjective, a good place to start is with NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements, a compendium authored by Lyle MacWilliam, MSc, FP.

When comparing supplements, the Comparative Guide uses a blended standard, or optimal daily intake. This is based on a compilation of the recommended daily nutritional intakes of 12 independent nutritional authorities, including:  Earl Mindell, RPh, MH; Richard Passwater, PhD; Nicholas Perricone, MD; and Julian Whitaker, MD.

The recommended daily intake for 47 nutrient categories is then established… what can be called optimal nutrition. Here is a comparison of RDA levels with the optimal nutrition (blended standard) found in the Comparative Guide:

Note the significant difference between RDA and optimal levels. It is particularly significant in the powerful anti-oxidants (Vitamins C & E). Perhaps this explains why so many studies claim that nutritional supplements don’t work… they use supplements at RDA, not optimal, levels.

The bottom line is: eat nutrient-rich foods to get as much optimal daily intake as possible. Then top it up with a quality multi-vitamin/mineral product to ensure your immune system gets optimal nutrition on a daily basis.
